If you are trying to get pregnant and use over-the-counter lubricants, you will want to read this:
A study from SUNY Upstate reports in January’s Fertility and Sterility that common vaginal lubricants may impede sperm’s movement enough to make conception more difficult. Researchers tested three different KY-brand lubricants along with Astroglide, Pre-Seed (a vaginal lubricant that is advertised as conception friendly), and various natural oils.
Their Findings:
- Synthetic lubricants (Astroglide and KY’s Sensitive, Warming, and Tingling lubricants) and sesame oil significantly slowed the motility of sperm and could make it harder to get pregnant.
- Pre-Seed brand lubricant, canola oil, mustard oil, and baby oil seem to be sperm-friendly.
Remember
These findings are related to sperm motility, not safe sex. If you are trying to avoid pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections, oil-based lubricants can deteriorate the integrity of a condom and make it ineffective.
